The American toad Anaxyrus americanus is a species of toad found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. This species is Maine’s only toad. The American toad is a short and squat amphibian, varying in shades of brown and covered in warts. They are more terrestrial than aquatic. These toads are mainly nocturnal and will breed in the spring and late summer. The American toad feeds from early morning into the evening and plays an important role in the environment in keeping insect populations in check.
