The ancient Roman city of Pompeii is located near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Southern Italy. In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the city along with other surrounding areas. Pompeii was buried under volcanic ash and pumice measuring 13 to 20 feet. Today, Pompeii has become a popular tourist destination and these are just a few images from a morning walk in early October.
